VR Experiences

This page gives my complete, up-to-date thoughts on VR. I love the immersion that it brings to games. UPDATE March 2025 - VR(as they have it at the library) can get borrowing after a while, it's best in short bursts.

NOTES FOR ALL VR SYSTEMS:

  • If it's blurry, it could be that the VR helmet is too or loose. You can move it up or down or tiggten/losen it.

Room-scale(you can walk around):
  • Overall - The Library's Room Scale VR is a bit complex and things sometimes go wrong and flexibility is required when they do. Also, please note the games on this list are not in any order.
  • Tilt Brush - A painting program, really fun and can be relaxing too. You should try different brushes, they are some fun ones, even moving lightning.
  • Home(HTC Vive Only) - There is an app launcher which is a living room on a mountain top. (I think the theme for this can be changed). There is a nice garden outside. I discovered that you can teleport around and customize the space. (add a statue and computer for example). You can also pick up items around and throw them! This is good silly fun since your not hurting any real items(and int this "game" they don't break). You can also throw them so they land outside the garden, they can't be grabbed when they are outside the garden(as far as I know).  I ended up chucking most of the stuff outside the garden!

We don't know how to get it but there is a paintbrush and you can't paint an object and then move it around in 3D space.

So in my first session, I had set up a statue a computer and monitor were floating in midair and there was a "library thrills!" moveable object in a corner. Lastly, most of the stuff on the shelves had been chucked! Don't worry though staff said they would reset things when it was time to pack up for the weekend.

Lastly, a big thanks to the facilitators as I could not see the real world and would have run into lots of real-world things if they were not watching me!

I had a lot of fun with this and hope to fool around with more latter.
UPDATE: Last time I tried this staff could not see me.

I have a feeling there is a lot more to this then I saw, so I have to play around with it from time to time.
  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes- This is a multiplayer game, one of you is in VR and that person has a VR bomb* in front of them. The other person(or people) have an overly-complex bomb-defusing manual in the real world. Examples of what's in the manual include things like "if the light is yellow and there is a USB port(picture is provided), hold the button for 2 seconds". It sounds stressful but I get blown up all the time in video games, so it's not too stressful. I can't talk too much about it now since when I and my friend tried it, we were plagued with technical issues and so I did not get to try it for very long. From what I did see, I like it but it's not super-awesome. (that bomb manual is too complex).
    * You know instead of the library staff putting a real bomb in front of you!
  • Richie's Plank Experience - this game has a couple of modes, in the "default" mode you jump off a plank in a city. You can also fly around the city with a jetpack and fight fires or release a trail of coloured paint behind you. Also they is a mode where you fly into missels. Remember they is no foot detection so you can kick them but it won't do anything.  There is also a nightmare mode, which I must leave the room when anyone else tries.
UPDATE: You can set up a plank to jump "off of" in the real world but they have never done this.
  • Job Simulator - Do versus jobs in a colourfual and wacky environment.  I tried the car repair one. You take out a potato battery(yes you read that correctly) and replace it with a nucklar rod? Then your asked to destroy an engine so the customer has to come back again.(Hay it's legal if you don't get caught right ;)). Then you charge ridiculous amounts to the costumers with the broken vericale. You can also put hot sause in the wiper fluid. As you can tell this game is very funny and you either play the mission as your supposed too or just play around. There is also a chef and office worker.
  • Super hot - in this game you fight polygon people. I found out after I tried it that they only try and attack you when you move and the faster you move, the faster they move. WARNING: This games story is very weird and at first staff would not let patrons see the ending for that reason.
  • Beat Sabre - In this musical timing game(think DDR) you have 2 light sab... I mean Light Swords(cause you to know we don't want to violate any trademarks). One sword is blue, one is red, you have to hit the blue and red blocks in the correct direction with the correct sword at the correct time! Yeah, it's that complex! The more blocks you hit with correct timeing the higher your score.
There are waves of energy and spikes you have to avoid as well.
So it turns out that to get a good rank you have to turn off things like "no-fail" and keep the arrows on but it took me a while to figure this out. So, you can either play for fun and not care about the lower rank or play for a higher rank but a more challenging game. It's up too you! I
UPDATE - Also they is a 360 mode where block can come from either direction.
  • Throw anything - There is a story but we only have limited time per game so I did not pay attention to it. Basically, there are zombies and you have to stop them by throwing anything. A fitting game for VR, considering it's common for VR reviewers to pick up random objects and throw them. This game was really fun and silly but I found it challenging!
  • I Expect You To Die- You must do very hard escape rooms in which you can die easily. For example: the sub, don't do anything, the sub floods(eventually). Close the valve, you turn off the oxygen(you can quickly turn it on again), open the door and the grenade falls out and the pin comes off.(yes I said 'grendate').
I mean this is worse the King's Quest! I don't find scrambling around to try and live scary in the slightest, it  a lot of fun to mess around with a glue gone in hopes that you can patch the crack in the sub window or try and block it with your hands. I don't know what to do with grandees!?! They is a cabert filled with them and you have to reach in they to get a tool.
  • Fruit Ninja - Based on the popular mobile game I have never played. In this game, you have TWO swords(which is awesome)! You are in a Ninja courtyard and fruit appears which you must slice with your TWO SWORDS! Don't slice the bombs and make sure you don't let the fruit "getaway".The facilitator took this video of me one time while doing it, check it out: It's here. It turns out when I play it often looks like that, also you feel like "Dust" from Dust An Elysian_Tail when you move your sword fast. Also, they are 3 modes and I am not sure how they are different. Here is a link to me playing the game UPDATE: Apparently this game does not work properly with they new system.
  •  Nature Treks - Walk though beautify senero. You have orbs that grow trees or change the weather, which you can drag onto things. They are lots of animals to see. You can move quickly foward but that can mack you mosistion sick. Thankfully you can also teleport.
  • Fruity Shooty -  You start off in the Staff Room. To start the game teleport over by the big purple machine pick up a "level" card and insert it, arrange your gun cards and pull the lever on the right. Staff can now walk you through this if it's confusing.

You have to scan the groceries as they come in, grab a cartoon gun and shoot the fruit when it attacks you(right in your face if you are not careful). It's a really fun game which I will have to try more, it might be a new favourite.

Man the sarcastic boss in this game is great! He says all sort of funny things like "Don't damage the goods, they may look cheap but it's more then you can afford!" and "Take a break from time to time, to do so submit an A1, B4 and C7 paper in triplekite!" One of the other things he said was to keep the staff room neat and tidy, so you know that's a temptation to break the nearby plats and throw the chairs across the room! (The fun of your damage haveing no consequences)
  • Vader Immortal II -You place as the tichiler character and must slash bad guys with your lightsaber in his dojo. You can also reflect projectiles, do force chock and moves things towards you. I highly recommend it.  You can also though your light saber. UPDATE: At higher levels you fight ugly robots and they can sneak up behind you!

UPDATE: Apparently this game does not work properly with they new system.
  •  Santa Simulator -
THIS GAME CAN MAKE YOU FEEL SICK - Santa's sleigh moves on its own and this can cause motion sickness, this can be greatly
mitigated* by sitting(if feels like your in a car then), though you will have to rotate your chair.
    * Not sure how effective this is for everyone. If you ever need to pause a game, the home button(at least on the old headset) is under the "circle pad" (where your thumb rests), I THINK facilitators can help you find it.

In this game you are Santa, you must throw the presents in the chimneys as you pass by the houses. The sleigh moves on its own, it does stop sometimes but you have to have good aim and through them at it when you're moving if you want a good score. This game is very fun, the best part is the crazy stuff you can do while you wait to get to the next spot! You can through present up in the air with one hand and see if you can catch them with the other. They will also rebound off your reindeer and another player remarked he thought he heard broken glass! I recommend you give this game a try!

The library has retired some VR systems I have moved those them to here.

Misolanous Notes:

  • Moving your head around quickly works great for you but can make other people watching the TV sick.
Lastly...

I am fascinated by the use of VR in therapy, it can be used for:

  • Escaping to a bigger space if your apartment feels too small
  • Getting over agoraphobia(the fear of large spaces) this is done using exposure therapy.
  • Meditation/relaxation by seeing a calm place.
