- Joining GLIC - I am now an improviser with Georgetown Little Improv Club. We put on a few different shows at Georgetown Little Theatre in the summer. We also "practise" on Wednesday evenings in the spring/summer.
How I got involved with this, is a most interesting story. My parents and I decided to go to a GLIC show and they asked someone from the audience to come on stage and without giving it I much thought decided to volunteer for that. I did not do to badly and I loved the show and decided to give improv a try. I was actually pretty good for someone with little experience.
I also invented my own game. The "genie game" in which a genie grants 3 audience wishes, but "magic is complicated" so they don't necessarily go according to plan. ;)
The one rule that they tell you is to have a "yes and" attitude, so if one of my co-improvisers said to me "this is a bomb", I can't say "no it's not it's an apple" but I can say "YES AND I am a bomb diffusing expert". It's a useful skill for real life as you are not always in a situation that you like but they are often ways to work with those less than pleasant situations.
Like all of my clubs, GLIC has also been the opportunity to make new friends. The people there will always come to your aid if your "stuck" and can't think of where to take the scene next. I look forward to doing more improv in the new year. You can see a promo video im in here. - Doing things with other clubs- this was my first full year with the Halton North Peel Naturalist Club and the Esquesing Historical Society. Being involved with these clubs and going to various outings is always fun. You can see some of my Naturalist club photos(some of which were taken in 2017) here. UPDATE: Good time to mention this funny side story about how You can't "escape" the library!
- Pathfinder - I started playing weekly pathfinder at The Hooded Goblin, it's a fantasy Role-Playing Game like Dungeons and Dragons. The point of this game is not to win or lose but tell a fun story. There is a narrator and a bunch of players. The narrator describes the scene and the players tell the narrator what they want to do. Dice are used to adding randomness to it and each character has a bunch of stats used to decide what they can and can not do. It's a lot of fun.
- The Adventure Zone(balance ark) - This year I listened to "The Adventure Zone", 3 brothers play "Dungeons and Dragons" with their father. It's very good, even when it gets more serious they don't forget to have fun. They do swear a lot, so it's suitable for work or in front of kids, you can listen too it here(bottom of the page). Thanks to my sister-in-law for telling me about this. :) I also started listening to "My Brother My Brother and Me" a comedy advice show by the same brothers.
- Virtual Reality - I had the chance to try VR this summer. VR is this new kind of gaming experience, that uses motion controllers and a helmet to make you feel like your in the game. I tried:
- Tilt Brush - A painting program, really fun and can be relaxing too.
- Richie's Plank Experience - this game has a couple of modes, in the "default" mode you jump off a plank in a city. You can also fly around the city with a jetpack and fight fires or release a trail of coloured paint behind you. There is also a nightmare mode, which I did not dare try but apparently, you're chased by a giant spider and end up being buried alive. Richie's Plank Experience is a fun demo but not something I think I could play for very long.
- Superhot - in this game you fight polygon people. I found out after I tried it that they only try and attack you when you move and the faster you move, the faster they move. This game is really fun and I want to try it again sometime.
- Murder Mystery Night(Masquerade) - I went to my first ever "Murder Mystery Party"(the event was called "Murder Mystery Night"). It was really excellent, (9.5/10 if you must use a 10 point scale). Each person was given information about their character before they came. More info was given to them on cards as the evening went along. We were supposed to try to stay in character the whole time. There was a part where we had to guess who the murderer was. It's really hard to guess since all the characters are not very nice people. In the kit we used, who the murder is. is pre-determined. Not to worry the odds of you being the murder are unlikely, in this case, there were about 20 participants so it was about 1 in 20 but guess what... I was the Murderer! (I did not know this till we sat around Agatha Christie style and read our final cards out loud.)

Click on the photo to see it bigger. I AM in this photo, behind the women in blue. You can hardly see me in my blue shirt and gold cap.
The guy in the grey mask to the right of me played an IT guy and was one in real life, strange as that is. He also loves the Linux operating system for the same reason as me, it gives him control! April 2019 update: To my surprise, I recently saw him again. His name is Zack and as it turns out. he is the partner of Sarah, who helped out with a number of the events listed here including this one.
At one point I noticed the women in blue had a strange mark on her arm. I thought it was a tattoo but got distracted and a few minutes later I felt something on my hand and looked down and there was the crepy women in the white mask writing a number on my hand! And the very end we found out, She was playing an assassin who was going to kill us one by one in the order we were numbered in! Creepy!
Also, I think some of the people in this photo(in black) are event organizers. If we needed help we talked to them.
Lastly, there was a lot of food at the event and it was really good. The event was $20 but worth it!
- Escape Room - I also did my first Escape Room with my friend Ro from GLIC.(officially known as 'A Stranger in the Library') We had to solve a bunch of puzzles before the time limit ran out. I could use a walky-talky to ask for hints. It was themed around local history and was pretty cool! It was $15 per team(so each of us paid $7.50*), we loved it, it was 10/10! We where told, we did very well for a puzzle that can be solved with up to 6 people. I can't say much more since the people who live in town might want to try it and the organizers might do the same one again. (though I am told they will change it in the future). More info about the escape room can be found by clicking here.
* Side note: That's actually a really good deal, a lot of people charge $25/person. - Boardgame nights - Geeks and Gamers has been away for a while but I have found a suitable replacement. I had a lot of fun with that. We tried my copy of "Apples To Apples", which is a very fun word matching games!
Some pedantic notes:
- They have card games at "board game night" in spite of the fact that's it's called "board game night".
- To confuse everyone, there was a teen exclusive event called "Murder Mystery Party" and mine was called "Murder Mystery Night" but the kit they used was by "My Murder Mystery Party". *Yeah, it's that bad!*
NEXT YEAR!
Next year:- I will turn 30, it's not every year one becomes a decade older. When I was in my teens, I thought I would feel a lot older at this point then I do.
- Is the next federal election and I must help out the political party I volunteer with.
- I will do more things out at that one thrilling place
- The video game Kindom Hearts III(big fan of the series) comes out next year but I don't have the hardware to play it.
BEST FACEBOOK POSTS OF THE YEAR
NOTE: Did not include posts about things I talked about here unless they were phrased in a neat way. Also, I don't want to spoil what the place I went to was so I've replaced its name with "[that place]"
NOTE: Some of the foram
"[that place] keeps raising the bar running all these cool events! Now I need a new way to define "the bar"! Also if we played word associations I most certainly would have to redefine the words I associate with [that place]!(not a bad thing). If anyone at the [that place] reads this, Keep up the good work!"
"This box is huge because it's an EXPANSION"
"You know your in a small town when.... you choose to go to a club instead of a library event and still end up with a winter program guide. :)"
"We made it into Microsoft Encarta 96!"(screenshot of "Halton Hills" went here)
I "bought" a $25 Amazon.ca gift card through my credit card rewards program! Neato!
If I say "good good" it's not a typo it means I listen to some awesome podcasts stiaring the McElrow family.
Gotta say not a pokemon guy but this movie looks neat:

I don't remember a sci-fi addressing this but time would work much differently if we had teleporters/ rapid transport to the other side of the world. Would most stores worldwide be open 24/7? (you can hire someone who lives anywhere too)
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for being Facebook friends with me!
Sue: My brother can’t afford to pay his water bill. What can I do to help?
Answer: Send him a “get well soon” card.

I found a clue in a Poirot movie!
A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation.
If you see them, send them this information as text (screenshots frighten them):
