Xmas with list

Here is my wishlist. It's intended for people who normally get me gifts since it's easier than uploading or emailing a file to those people.

  • A Raspberry Pi. I want the model with built-in ethernet, wireless Bluetooth and a 3.5 MM output jack.(RCA jacks would also work) I would also like a case for the board. I  would like to make a wireless"bridge" so that computers in my room that don't have wifi can connect to the internet. I would also like to use it as a Bluetooth audio receiver for my Android.
  • Jazz Jackrabbit Collection from https://www.gog.com/game/jazz_jackrabbit_collection. (not the Jazz 2 collection,  I will consider buying that myself)
  • McMaster gift card
  • Wastwize gift card
  • Munny to spend at GameHord(we can set up an account and put the money in the account)
  • Gift card for a photography store

New samples on my website

There are some new samples on my website, check em out:

http://www.jamiemarchant.info/drupal7/?q=node/3

They are:

  • A Java program that lets you choose a sound card and play white noise through it as a test. It will have a bigger role to play in my ClipReader, which I am porting to Java. The port has taken a lot of work and needs testing before I add features, so you won't see the sound card selecter in the reader for a while. I want to test the reader a lot more on Windows before I release it. I have not had time to do so since Linux is my primary OS, these days.(that is why I started porting it.)

Some Windows drivers will allow you to select headphones as a separate audio device than your speakers. This program correctly lets you choose between them. In the future I want it to allow you to select a specific speaker pare of a sound card.(that is "front speakers of my surround sound).
  • A C++ Windows program that gives information about your computer. I wrote it a while ago but when I changed the theme for my site, the HTML version of the code, no longer rendered in a way which I liked. Adding a link to a PDF allows the formatting to not interfer, it also makes sure white spaces show up the way they do in my IDE. I did not use plaintext since I thought it was a lot more readable with "syntax highlighting".

What facoters make a program last longer.

So some older programs and games still run on newer computers. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was released in 1998 and still runs perfectly fine on a new version of Windows. Rayman 2 which came out around the same time has trouble running on Windows XP, it also has trouble running on newer video cards.

So the question I want to ask today is what factors make software last longer?

  • Luck - One never knows what future features hardware and software may change that may break your software. Microsoft introduced "sound acceleration" in Windows 98 which caused issues for "The Journeyman Project 3". The people who wrote the game could never have expected this to happen.
  • Deprecated functions -  Ok so for those who don't know a function is a piece of code, that goes off and does a task.  Sometimes a function is outdated at which point it becomes 'deprecated'. These functions are often removed or reworked thus using them is a bad idea. When functions become deprecated the documentation usually provides an alternative.
  • Using quirks - relying on some quirk of the hardware/software is never a good idea, as these are usually patched out.(as the also pose a security risk).

  • DRM - Digital Rights Management is not only annoying but can also cause compatibility issues. So there is a piece of software called "Wine" which lets you run Windows programs on the Linux OS. Looking at several pieces of software in the database I found comments saying the program would work fine if the DRM was removed. I've read similar accounts with people trying to get the old software running on newer computers. It makes sense when you think about it as quirks are often used to program DRM.

So if you want your software to last a really long time, try and follow the above practice. If you have a positive comment or something to add, please feel free to leave one.

PS2/PS3 controller weights

Hi:
The PS2 and PS3 controllers are extremely similar. For some reason, my hands get more easily tired using the PS2 controller than with the PS3 controller. I decided that they might be a difference in weights,  I was surprised by my results.

The PS3 controller(which is wireless) has a weight of 176G. At first, I waid the PS2 controller with the cord coiled around it. It came out too 242G. That's a difference of 66G, that does not seem much but I think it could make a difference over time. Then I wondered how much the cord wad. I uncoiled the cord and waid again. I got approximately 180G, that is only 4G difference! I don't think that would make much difference in stressing my mussels! But it's hard to tell how much weight the cord had on the scale at any given moment. The number went up or down depending on what position the cord was in. This did not happen with the PS3 controller.

My conclusion is that the PS2 is heavier but mainly because of the cord. Also, the cord limits the way I can hold the controller which could mean I have to cramp my hands more to use it. Lastly, I am not sure how good the scale I was using was since I just looked it up on Wikipedia which says my PS3 dual-shock controller should weigh 192G. What do you think about this? How much does the cord actually weigh? Is the weight or something else that makes the PS3 controller more comfortable?

Year end blog

Hi:
It's time to do my year end blog. They have been some bad things that happened this year but I would rather focus on the good things:

  • I traded in my Sega Genesis and games for 70% discount on a used PS3 at GameHord(here in town). It was a good decision. More info about this can be found here: http://jamiemarchant.blogspot.ca/2016/07/ps3.html
  • My friend Barb from the camera club gave me her old Nikon D90 as a birthday present! The quality of my photos have improved.
  • My Dad retired yesterday and I am happy for him.
  • Here are some other highlights.
Best movies I saw(in no order):

  • Paddington
  • The Pirates! Band of Misfits
  • Finding Dory
  • Documentaries hosted by David Attenborough and David Macaulay. Macaulay wrote a series of illustrated books on historical subjects like Castles. These where turned into documentary latter on.  People my age probally know him best for his kids book "The Way Things Work".
Best TV show I saw:
  • Murdoch Mysteries. I especially liked the Christmas special.
  • Ounce Upon a Time. << still a good show!
Best video games I've played:
  • Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep(HD)
  • Evoland 2
  • Sonic Unleashed(which I bought for my PS3)
Best video game I watched someone else play:
  • Obduction! << I would have a copy of this but my computer can't run it.
Other memory things I have done:
  • Played many games of Monopoly Deal
  • Gone on photo shoots. I have done this with the club and I've started doing it on my own. At Christmas and Halloween I did shoots around my neighbourhood. I also started doing shoots with my friend Doris from the camera club. Check out my Halloween and Christmas photos here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskJdwzYw (all Christmas photos) and Halloween walk: https://flic.kr/s/aHskGmSyGF
  • Played board games with groups like Georgetown Geeks and Gammers, as well as a Brampton group that I can't remember the name of.
Next year:
  • I will get a new credit card from RBC. They are retiring they old line of cards, the new card will have the same rates as the old one but the rewards(which I never used), we work differently.
  • I will keep watching good TV shows.
  • My sister got my some online multiplayer games and we will be playing them.
  • I will be watching less YouTube videos next year, as they often are more of a way to pass time.
  • I will improve myself in other ways that are private and I don't feel like talking about here. One should remember that new years is not the only time when one can improve oneself.
  •  With Ontario's new fixed election cycle the next election is scheduled for 2018. Those of us involved in political parties may have to start planning next year.
  • It will be Canad's 150th anniversary next year so they will be losts of celerbrasoins along those lines.

Lastly a silly thought "It's almost 2017 and still don't have my darn hover car! come on people hurry up and make those!".

NOTE: Not sure why some of the text is different.
